Over the years Mr Tanaka created one of the most prestigious Kimono galleries in Japan. His collection consists of the finest silk with the most beautiful handwoven patterns. Tanaka says many components of Kimono creation are now diminishing, as workers become older and their techniques are not succeeded by younger generations. At the same time, the kimono became a luxurious item, disconnected from the everyday lives of regular people. His life’s work is to protect the remaining kimono workshops in Japan by developing products with young designers to make them more suited to the current demand, by finding the customer segments who will support the industry and promoting the authentic yet modernized images of kimonos.
